Councilman Rafael Salemanca, who represents neighborhoods like Hunts Point and Longwood, is demanding the Office of Inspector General of the United States Postal Service conduct an internal audit into what he says is poor postal service in his district.
"It's a form of discrimination," says Salemanca. "Why it that the South Bronx is getting worst postal service in the City of New York?"
Residents in his district say they have complained about long lines, rude window clerks, mail delivered to the wrong address and lost mail over past several years.
They also told News 12 The Bronx that they are tired of seeing construction outside the post office on East 167th Street. They claim the work has been moving slowly for more than a month.
In a statement, the USPS says, "We recognize the concerns raised within our communities and are ramping up improvements."
They told News 12 that those improvements include meetings with community and business leaders to address customer concerns, installing parcel lockers and modifying collection boxes to address to local security issues and expanding the use of handheld point-of-sale devices and staffing to ease lines.
Salemenca says he will be meeting with the Office of Inspector General sometime next week.
