A United States Military Academy at West Point cadet and his father are being credited with saving a person's life after a crash in Fort Montgomery.
A car crashed into a utility pole early Sunday morning on Route 9W, according to officials.
The Pickett family was driving back to the United States Military Academy at West Point when they saw the aftermath.
"There was not a lot of thinking, there was no talking, just saw somebody who was in need of help," said Cadet Larry Pickett Jr.
His father, Larry Pickett Sr., said his son never hesitated to help.
"There was no hesitation at all, he sprang into action to save that man's life," Pickett Sr. said.
Video captured the moment when Pickett Jr. and Pickett Sr. got the man out of the car and carried him across Route 9W to safety.
The two pulled the driver from the vehicle just moments before it burst into flames.
Pickett Jr. is a second-year cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point and also plays Army football.
"It was awesome to see as a dad, he also talked about his military experience kicking in," Pickett Sr. explained.
The heroic actions are even gaining attention from the Secretary of the Army Daniel P. Driscoll.
A social media post says:
"Members of our U.S. Army continue to remind us why they are the best of our nation, this time by a Cadet. Cadet Larry Pickett Jr., a football player from the West Point - The U.S. Military Academy, pulled a man from a burning vehicle — an act of extraordinary courage and selflessness. This young leader embodies the highest values of the Army and West Point: duty, honor, country. He showed that he can stand ready to act under pressure, whether on the football field, in his community, or in the future with the Soldiers under his command. We are proud — and deeply grateful— for his heroism. America’s future is in good hands."
"I'm extremely thankful and humbled for the opportunity to be here, be a part of something that is bigger than myself, answering the call to serve. I'm very thankful," Pickett Jr. said.
News 12 reached out to emergency crews for an update on the driver involved in the crash. As of Monday evening, he was at a nearby hospital.
A cause of the accident was still unknown as of Monday evening.
