City Council members announced on Thursday they are enacting a new bill to require the NYPD to undergo specific training on how to interact and engage with people on the autism spectrum.
Currently more than 300,000 New Yorkers are on the autism spectrum and the number continues to rise.
The training would be three-fold, enhancing the awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorder, providing interpersonal skills to safely respond to emergencies and techniques on how to interview and investigate cases involving a person with autism.
""As a proud Aunt of a nephew who is on the spectrum, we want to make sure that we are culturally sensitive,” said Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse.
The NYPD does already train officers on how to interact people with ASD, but they say this will expand that training and will require officers to receive it every two years in order to be up to date on the latest practices.
