City Council has voted to expand Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero plan to improve traffic safety.

The council approved 17 bills and resolutions to improve traffic safety in the city. The plans include the designation of slow zones, with seven being implemented this year and another seven planned for next year. The bill also requires the Department of Transportation to repair traffic signals within 24 hours and imposes stiff penalties for drivers who break traffic laws.

The council also wants to lower the city speed limit from 30 mph to 25. The measure would have to be approved by Albany.

Proponents of the legislation say 4,000 New Yorkers are seriously injured and more than 250 are killed each year in traffic accidents.
