A resident of City Island says the summer heat is bringing a new wave of concern as social distancing fades away.
“We have close to 4,500 people living here. On any given weekend, that quadruples. That’s a lot of people in a little spot,” says City Island resident Robert Carmody.
Carmody says with the summer months quickly approaching, the island needs the NYPD to help with street and foot traffic.
“Once the weather peaks at any time of the year, whether is January, whether it's a nice day, the traffic shows up and we are not prepared,” he says,
On Sunday afternoon, lines could be seen wrapped around Sammy’s Fish Box and Johnny’s Reef, the two restaurants still only serving take out.
"They are doing their job inside - keeping people apart - but once they get out the door they aren’t responsible for that," says Carmody.
The Department of Health says that as of Sunday, the zip code of City Island only has 114 positive cases of coronavirus.
“We have a low percentage of people getting sick. Now the warm weather is here, you increase the amount of people and the possibility of people getting sick,” says Carmody.
Carmody says he hopes visitors will think about their actions before rushing onto long lines and packed parking lots.
“When you come to City Island or any neighborhood, just abide by the rules...just make it safe, not for us but for you,” he says.
