Five years after Superstorm Sandy, a huge battery strong enough to power 20 homes during natural disasters has been installed at Jacobi Medical Center.
The battery comes all the way from Washington State, and it's the first of its kind in New York City.
When empty the battery weighs 25,000 pounds, but when filled with electrolytes, it will weigh 80,000 pounds -- as heavy as an 18-wheeler.
It's part of the city's resiliency efforts to be prepared for the next natural disaster. Since the battery can power 100 kilowatts, it would be crucial if a storm like Sandy would hit.
The city picked Jacobi Medical Center to house the battery because it's new and had the space for it.
It's expected to be fully operational by the new year.
