The Co-op City community came together Sunday to mourn a beloved cab driver who was killed on the job Saturday morning.
It was a somber mood at the home of 52-year-old Kutin Gyimah as family and community members stopped by to pay their respects.
Gyimah was just starting his workday early Saturday morning when he dropped passengers off at beach 54 Street and Arverne Boulevard in Far Rockaway, Queens.
Police say the passengers attempted to evade the cab fare and when Gyimah chased after them, they assaulted him.
He then hit his head on the ground, which caused his death.
Police are now on the hunt for five suspects.
Members who visited the mourning family said Gyimah and his wife are very active members at the Ghana Methodist United Church and that he had never missed a day of church.
They described him as a hardworking man who always took care of his family.
Daniel Obeng, godfather of Gyimah's children, said the cab driver provided for his family both at home and abroad. He said the actions of the fare evaders will not only have repercussions for Gyimah's family but those abroad as well.
The cab company Gyimah worked for, Big Apple Taxi Fleet, said it will cover his funeral costs, while the church is also planning to hold a memorial for the family in their most difficult times.
Gyimah leaves behind four young children and his grieving wife.
