Residents at 1777 Grand Concourse say they were left without power for most of the day Thursday — leaving some neighbors, including people with disabilities, stranded outside in the cold.
Tenants tell News 12 the electricity went out around 9 a.m. They say they expected the outage because their management company posted a flier on the front door stating Con Edison would be upgrading electrical service. The flier told residents power would be restored by 2 p.m.
But when News 12 arrived shortly after 6:30 p.m., the building was still dark. The lights came back on moments after our crew arrived.
One resident, Louisia Watkins, who depends on a wheelchair and lives on the sixth floor, says she had been outside waiting for hours for the elevators to start working.
“I am disabled with rheumatoid arthritis, and it’s been a nightmare,” Watkins said. “All my phones are out, and I’m scared to go upstairs because without any phone service anything could happen.”
News 12 contacted Con Edison, who said they were not performing any work at the building and were not involved in the outage.
News 12 also reached out to Asden, the property management company, and is waiting to hear back.
