Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial kickoff to summer, but before people head out to the beach, there are new restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic.
While New York City beaches are open for walking and sitting on the sand, there is no swimming allowed and no lifeguards will be on duty. However, those restrictions have not been stopping people from already coming out.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said that beachgoers must practice social distancing and should wear face coverings.
The mayor says face coverings will be passed out at beaches and parks across the city all weekend.
