Following the unveiling of a new section of Sheridan Boulevard in the Bronx last week, Council Member Rafael Salamanca is displeased with the Bronx being the only borough without a borough specific transportation commissioner.
Salamanca voiced the need for a Bronx-specific transportation commissioner during a meeting of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez told Salamanca that there is currently an interim commissioner in place and that the department is close to permanently filling the position.
Salamanca believes that the hiring process needs to move faster.
According to data acquired by Transportation Alternatives, the number of serious injuries is 23% higher on roads in the Bronx than they are citywide.
