The Crown Heights community came together to remember Malik Tyquarn Graves, who was fatally shot by police one year ago to the day on Wednesday.
Investigators say when they came upon Graves at Bergen Street and Rochester Avenue, he was hiding behind a tree with a gun.
He was shot by multiple officers. Police say bodycam footage revealed that he didn’t drop his weapon.
However, his family says he didn’t have to die that way. They described Graves, 34, as a loving person.
There were prayers, reflections and picture collages Wednesday as loved ones vowed to “never forget his name.”
Members of his family say they are seeking justice. They say they will continue to keep his memory alive each year with this community event.
