Many families have faced food insecurities this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the Department of Education is stepping in to help.

With Thanksgiving this week, the DOE wants families to know that they can pick up a special holiday meal to put on their tables on Thursday.

Over the last few months, kitchen workers in schools have been essential in putting together more than 65 million meals for families in need.

The staff at Brooklyn Collegiate High School is just one of the hundreds of schools across the city where the DOE has its meal hub program.

This week, they plan to be closed on Thanksgiving but want to make sure families have food for the holiday.

On the menu is roasted turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, veggies and an apple dessert.

The meals have been available since Monday. Wednesday is the last day.

Families can pick up the meals in addition to the food the program has been providing daily over the last few months.

The Thanksgiving meal is available at about 1,000 DOE schools between 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday. A quarter of those will also be serving the meals from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
