The DOT unveiled new pedestrian safety improvements at one of the most dangerous intersections in the Bronx.
It says improvements at the intersection of Buckner Boulevard and Hunts Point Avenue include new slip lanes, a pedestrian safety island, new median-to-median crossing, new median and curb extensions and painted sidewalk extensions.
Officials say they have reorganized the way traffic flows and even adjusted the time of the signal to reduce the lineup that blocks the intersection.
According to the Department of Transportation, Bruckner Boulevard and Hunts Point Avenue ranks the second highest in the Bronx for serious pedestrian injuries. Grand Concourse and East 170th is number one,
The DOT says at the intersection, there was a total of 263 injuries from 2009 to 2013, including 45 pedestrian injuries.
The agency says it also plans on extending bike lanes and adding more safety enhancements in the area.
