A day after a New York City Department of Transportation electrician was killed on the side of the Hutchinson River Parkway, officials urged drivers to be more mindful of roadside workers.
George Staab and a colleague had pulled onto the parkway's shoulder to perform maintenance work. A passing driver fatally struck him.
"We ask that New Yorkers take this tragedy to heart as they drive by the hardworking men and women doing the critical work of maintaining our roadways," DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said in a statement.
The 57-year-old Staab was from Suffolk County on Long Island.
