Drag character spotlights artist's perception of gender
Can a woman be a drag queen? Drag can often conjure up thoughts of RuPaul's "Drag Race," where men cross-dress and transform into amazing characters.
But Victoria was born as a woman and she says women have been doing drag for years -- people just don’t really know about it. Performing as a drag queen is not an easy task, it's a job like any other job.
News 12's Joanna Hernandez met Victoria at her home in Manhattan where she had just returned from her day job to start doing her makeup for a competition.
“Drag is about gender and the artist's perception of gender, how they perform it through the makeup, the wigs and body language,” she says.
And it takes talent to do everything on your own. As Victoria transformed into Vicky Deville, she demonstrated the skills it takes to pay attention to all the details. Anyone can do drag, but it takes certain people -- men or women -- to get in front of a crowd and create a whole skit from scratch.
