A Bronx father of six is fighting for his life in a hospital after he was struck by a vehicle as he crossed a street.
The vehicle struck Hakeem Sunhill, 39, as he crossed in the middle of the street near the intersection of East Gun Hill Road and Bronxwood Avenue Thursday, according to police. Sunhill was just blocks from his home at the time of the incident.
Sunhill is now in a coma. His younger brother, Mousa Sunhill, describes Hakeem, known to many in the community as "Sammy," as a hard-worker who saved for years to own his own bodega, which he has run for several years. The victim moved to the U.S. from Yemen when he was 7 years old.
Mousa says his brother's wife, who has been by her husband's bedside, witnessed the incident. The victim has six children between the ages of 15 years old and 7 months old. He also has 13 brothers and sisters.
Charges haven't been filed against the driver, who stayed at the scene.
