A bullet that tore through an FDNY EMS ambulance in Claremont is now at the center of a renewed push for better pay and protection for New York City’s paramedics.
The shooting happened as an EMS crew responded to a 911 call on Webster Avenue. Police say gunfire erupted nearby, sending rounds through both the front and back of the ambulance. Miraculously, no one inside was hit.
Michael Greco, president of the union representing EMS workers, said the moment he got the call, he feared the worst.
“I’m getting a phone call because somebody’s dead. Thank God nobody was,” he said.
Union leaders say the incident is a reminder of the risks paramedics face every day, often without the compensation or staffing levels needed to keep them safe.
