The FDNY is pushing to increase fire safety awareness as people prepare for the holidays with lights, trees and candles.
With Hanukkah underway, many residents are already lighting candles at night.
And firefighters say flames can fully engulf a Christmas tree in just 12 seconds.
Experts recommend keeping trees heavily watered -- sometimes by pouring as much as four gallons a day into the stand.
They also say residents should avoid using extension cords near Christmas trees and recommend unplugging lights when leaving the room or going to sleep.
Additionally, firefighters recommend using UL-approved lights -- preferably LEDs.
