FDNY: Up to 200 people evacuated due to Exterior Street gas main leak that shut part of Major Deegan

The FDNY say a gas main was hit by an excavator and forced 200 people to evacuate the area.

A gas main on Exterior Street in the Bronx ruptured and shut down part of the Major Deegan Expressway Monday.
The FDNY says the gas main was hit by an excavator around 8 a.m.
Hazmat crews and firefighters responded to the scene and shut down part of the expressway.
Fire officials say a nearby school had to temporarily shelter in place, and around 200 people were evacuated.
Firefighters were able to work with Con Edison to shut down the gas main.
No injuries were reported.
