Cleanup is underway after a three-story building in Carroll Gardens collapsed Wednesday evening.
Fire officials and the Department of Buildings tell News 12 the building had multiple active violations, including a recent stop work order. News 12 is told fixes were being made to the wall, which at the time, had a bulge.
The NYPD Special Ops Unit shared a video on social media of aviation units above the building, showing just how extensive the damage was when the building collapsed.
The owners of Body Elite Gym posted on social media that they had been there for 36 years. According to Body Elite's website, the building had been there for more than 150 years.
In a post on social media, Body Elite said in part, "We have been devoted to the community we served. Words can't describe the overwhelming shock. We are extremely grateful that the gym was closed due to COVID.”
“It’s unbelievable, I’m just standing there. And I think of all the people I knew there that could’ve been there,” says Elite Gym owner Victor Gigante.
News 12 is told only one person was injured and that their injuries are just minor. No one else was in the building or on the sidewalk at the time.
As for the cause of the collapse, the Department of Buildings is working to try and get to the bottom of it.
