Back to school often means new supplies, new clothes and a new haircut to impress your classmates.

But for some parents, these costs may become too much to handle. The Food Bank For New York City has partnered with a local barber, Sammy Schneiderman, to give out free haircuts to kids in the Longwood community Tuesday afternoon.

"You gotta motivate the young generation to do better, so I see it as a free haircut would motivate them to go to school and do what they gotta do," said Schneiderman, owner of Barber King.

Edwin Rivera, father of four boys, says this act of kindness saves him up to $120 to buy his kids more school supplies.

"It's a blessing, like I was explaining to him over there. A lot of parents right now having struggles just trying to keep up with the expenses," Rivera said.

There was also a mobile food pantry on site giving out staples and fresh seasonal produce - all part of the Food Bank's larger efforts to support New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity.
