A former Manhattan College dorm building is being transitioned into a shelter to house migrant families.
Crews were seen moving boxes of bunk beds into the building at 435 West 238th St. on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Councilmember Eric Dinowitz, the shelter has 95 rooms and will be ran by WestHab, a nonprofit that provides supportive and affordable housing. He says there is a nine-month contract for the shelter.
"One of my main concerns is how will the administration work with us? My office and I have been trying to be partners in supporting the unhoused and migrants," Dinowitz said. "We collected hundreds and hundreds of bags of clothing for migrants and we worked really hard to reach out to DSS to make sure everyone in the community are getting the support and services that they need to thrive."
Dinowitz adds that the community was notified about the city's proposal to open a shelter at the location earlier this year.
"We should prioritize the construction and renovation of housing over shelters, but the administration has chosen to incentivize the use and construction of shelters rather than permanent housing," Dinowitz said.
Some residents like Riverdale local Miriam Hendel are "all for it".
"I was thinking I want to volunteer and help, I know there is a perspective of thinking this is a destruction of the neighborhood and I think that's wrong," said Hendel.
Other residents are not as welcoming to the idea, with some even rallying outside of the building last year when the idea was first proposed.
News 12 reached out to the mayor's office for more information about the shelter plans and is waiting to hear back.
