A Morris County town has discovered hundreds of thousands of dollars, apparently sitting untouched, and no one knows where it came from.

The discovery of the money comes as residents are putting increased pressure on the town council to shell out more money for the sports fields.

Roxbury Township officials say that they think the $300,000 has been sitting there for 20 years.

Meanwhile, the ball fields at Kiwanis Park in the Succasunna section of town are in disrepair.

“We have been looking to get baseball dirt here – clay for the fields – for the last eight years. That’s been in the budget,” says RJ Casendino, youth football program director.

But he says that when it comes time to write the checks for the funding, the town has put it off.

Casendino leads a group that started to show up at town council meetings. They were stunned to hear that officials recently found a fund with $300,000.

“Unknown on the timeframe. Unknown if it was gaining interest. Unknown how it got there,” says he says.

Officials are working to figure it out. It could be tax money or a grant used to pay back tax money.

Casendino first heard about the fund two weeks ago. But neither a summary nor video of that budget meeting are posted on the town's website. He says that the town does not seem eager to fix up the fields.

“We just want a clear explanation of why this money was just found, specifically given the condition of the fields in town. It’s just a little ironic now this money was found,” Casendino says.

Right now, the plan is to use the money for tennis courts. Although, Town Manager John Shepherd says he agrees there is a need for new baseball clay. The fences and dugouts could use some work, too. Shepherd did not agree to be interviewed on camera for this story.

The mayor and town council also did not return a request for comment.
