Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy is calling on the village police to halt a program that warns drivers about the dangers of leaving car doors unlocked.
As News 12 reported, police were opening unlocked cars and leaving notes, warning drivers to "Lock It or Lose It."
The goal was to reduce crime and protect residents during the holidays.
The program has been stopped after complaints that it was invasive and intrusive.
Mayor Kennedy says police will no longer enter unlocked cars.
Instead, they will throw the warning letter on the front seat, while activating their body camera.
