Gov. Kathy Hochul and Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that 13 people have been charged for operating a stolen goods and resale ring at Home Depot locations across the state.
The indicted thieves met almost daily to scheme which location they would steal from, authorities say.
Surveillance video taken from a Brooklyn Home Depot in May of this year shows a man putting carbon monoxide alarms into garbage bins before wheeling them out of the store.
The stolen items were resold throughout New York and on online marketplaces.
Over $2.2 million in merchandise was stolen in 319 recorded incidents of theft, resulting in a 780-count indictment.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said, "This case sends a strong message to would-be criminals – if you engage in retail theft, we will find you and hold you accountable to the full extent of the law."
