After yesterday’s mass shooting at a South Florida high school that left 17 dead, parents in the Bronx are looking to open up conversations with their children about the tragedy.
Parents outside P.S 71 school say it is tough getting back to the daily routine of dropping off their children because of everything that happened yesterday.
"I take them to school every day, I pick them up every day and that's as much as you can do as a parent,” says mother Lizabeth Decastro. “Just make sure they get there safely inside the gates and hopefully knowing that the school security will take care of everything."
Parents are talking to their children about these mass shootings so they know what to do in case of an emergency.
"You have to have that conversation with them just in case something like that goes down so they know to get out of there,” Edward Fichder, a parent said.
The Department of Education says that it is doing its part by working closely with the NYPD and school safety committees to make sure detailed safety plans are in place.
Schools must run through four lockdown drills and eight evacuation drills every year, according to the Department of Education.
