Engineers for the property owner where a coach bus partially collapsed through a multi-level parking structure yesterday evening are expected to provide the Town of North Hempstead with a detailed report on next steps today, according to a town spokesperson.
Town officials said the report should provide a timeline of when and how the bus will be removed, the full extent of the damage and what caused the collapse.
The collapse happened yesterday just after 5 p.m. at 1979 Marcus Ave. in North New Hyde Park. The lot is part of a large office building.
First responders yesterday said the bus was stabilized and no one was injured, but the vehicle has sat virtually untouched throughout most of today.
"It sucks that you know, it happened over there but I'm just praying to God that nothing like that happens on this side," Connie Somersell who works at the adjacent building said. "We do get leaks when it rains, but nothing to this extreme."
Manhasset-Lakeville fire and town officials said engineers still need to determine the structural integrity of the lower lot where office employees had parked their cars. Workers have been unable to retrieve them and were told to find alternative ways home last night.
People will be able to get their vehicles under supervision once it's determined safe to do so, according to town officials.
"If this can happen here, what's to say it's not going to happen here or anywhere else, so it's kind of scary," Jeanine Marco, who works at the adjacent building, said.
Town officials said the garage has no violations on record, but it's unclear when it was last inspected and by whom.
Officials said that while asphalt can buckle during extreme heat like yesterday, which nearly reached triple digits, it's still unclear if that played a role in the collapse.
Lincoln Equities Group lists the property in its portfolio, but a spokesperson said it was sold five years ago. Online records indicate that The Birch Group bought the lot and building in 2020. A company spokesperson has not yet responded to our request for comment.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
