Juanita Holmes made history Thursday as NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea named her the new chief of patrol.
With her new role, Holmes becomes the highest ranking African American woman in NYPD history and highest-ranking uniformed woman ever.
She is also the first female chief of patrol.
Holmes has 30 years of experience within the NYPD. She previously commanded the School Safety Division, Domestic Violence Unit, Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Training, Borough Commander of Queens North, Police Service Area 2 and 81st Precinct.
