A judge has ordered a temporary stay that would fine chain restaurants up to $600 for not adding salt warning icons to their menus.
The order came Monday as inspections of restaurants were to begin today.
The law went into effect in December, calling for all chain restaurants to add the icons to their menus for items containing more than 2300 mg of sodium, or the equivalent to one tablespoon of salt.
The restaurant association has appealed the ruling in an effort to overturn the law. The city has until March 18 to follow up with the appeal.
Meanwhile, city health inspectors will not be issuing violations to restaurants who do not add the icons to their menus until a judge has lifted the stay.
