Some students spent part of their spring break battling it out in the kitchen.

Students in the Food Explorers Program of New York Edge, a provider of after-school care, competed in a chopped-style culinary competition called "Battle of the Baskets" on Thursday.

Students from across the five boroughs applied to compete, but only two schools were chosen, M.S. 302 and P.S. 121, both schools located in the Bronx.

"They are learning about cultures, they are learning about careers, they are looking about safety of food handling and equipment and its all translated so those kids can cook at home," said Shelby Conn, director of STEM and food science at New York Edge.

The competition was hosted by Douglaston Development and held at Level BK in Williamsburg.

Kids were divided into three teams and given secret basket ingredients that had to be worked into the dish they created and presented to a panel of judges for a taste test.
