Tenants of 1183 Gerard Ave. are trying to hold their landlord accountable for what they are calling poor living conditions, including peeling paint, missing tiles and multiple leaks.
CASA, or Community Action for Safe Apartments, advocated Tuesday on the behalf of the tenants outside of their building.
Residents organized a Tenant’s Association several years ago when they saw their concerns over mold, cracks and broken appliances were not being heard. As a result of their organizing efforts, the building was placed in the city's Alternative Enforcement Program, which identifies 200 of the city's worst buildings for officials to keep an eye on each year.
They also received a rent reduction from the state Housing Agency. But after multiple meetings with landlord Robert Kaszovitz, they claim conditions have not improved.
Kaszovitz turned up on the public advocate's worst New York City landlords list for 2017.
The Tenant’s Association says it filed a case in housing court in July 2017. The city Department of Housing Preservation and Development says it has been putting pressure on the landlord to make necessary repairs. Since then, he has brought down the number of violations from 242 to 75.
News 12 reached out to Kaszovitz and is waiting to hear back.
