State Sen. Jeffrey Klein (D ? Bronx) wants to make it mandatory for alcohol venders to have ID scanners after statistics revealed teens have easy access to alcohol, especially in the Bronx.

The report, by the New York State Senate, shows the Bronx has stores with the highest number of arrests for serving alcohol to minors. Statistics from 2002 through 2006 show the Bronx had more than twice the number of arrests than any other New York City borough, with 141.

Some said they were surprised to hear their neighborhood stores sell alcohol to minors. Officials say the Dram Shop Act holds store clerks or bartenders accountable if a minor gains access to alcohol and then causes damage in some capacity. Klein says he wants to apply that act to stores that sell fake IDs as well.

Klein says there is currently no penalty for stores that sell fake IDs.
