LinkNYC helps residents learn about borough through photos
LinkNYC is helping residents learn about the history of the borough through photographs.
LinkNYC, which has been connecting New Yorkers using free calling and Wi-Fi services, is incorporating photos into its more than 1,700 kiosks.
The photos of New York streetscapes, buildings and scenes from everyday life were taken from the Museum of the City of New York.
They will join the rotating slideshow of bus and subway arrival times, New York City fun facts, and advertisements - which the city says pays for the links.
Critics of the links point out its potential for mass surveillance because of its Bluetooth capabilities and outward facing cameras.
Others argue it adds color to an otherwise bland commute.
LinkNYC hopes to install over 7,500 more platforms over the next several years.
