What started as a simple love for coffee has grown into a community staple on Long Island. Now,
Soul Brew Coffee is celebrating 10 years in St. James -- and the laid-back vibe that keeps customers around.
Owner Kristin Walsh says the goal has always been to create an experience that feels like an escape. “The goal for me is to try to make it feel like you’re not on Long Island -- you’re more upstate, and you wanted to escape for a moment.”
That vision comes to life the second you walk in the coffee shop. The space is filled with color, music, and an artsy, welcoming atmosphere that encourages people to slow down and stay awhile.
Walsh’s journey started early. Growing up around food, her mom was a deli cook. She began working as a barista at just 18 -- and quickly fell in love with coffee culture. “Once I started working with coffee in college, I just fell in love with the atmosphere… I might as well drop out and open one.” That passion now drives a menu featuring specialty coffee, fresh pastries, and a full brunch lineup. Regulars say one of the highlights is the rotating weekend specials -- dishes that change and are never repeated.
And it’s not just the food and drinks that keep Long Islanders coming back -- it’s the sense of community. Melissa LoPiccolo, a longtime customer, says her connection to Soul Brew spans years and locations. “I grew up going to the other location in Bellmore, now I live 800 feet from this one.”
As the St. James location marks a decade in business, one thing remains the same: a commitment to good coffee, good food, and good vibes.
