Lower speed limits are coming to multiple New York City roadways as part of a city effort to boost safety in the wake of numerous crashes.
The “Streets Week” initiative includes several changes that aim to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe.
This means 45 miles of major streets will have a lower speed limit.
The New York City Department of Transportation says nationwide speeding has gone up during the coronavirus pandemic. It says that while the speed was reduced to 25 mph on city streets in 2014, it didn’t include arterial roads.
Data shows lowering the speed limit can lower the chance of serious injury.
The city is taking action by reducing the speed limit from 35 to 30 mph in some areas, where other streets at 30 mph will go down to 25 mph.
This week, the NYPD will also have extra patrols making sure that drivers yield to pedestrians.
Speed cameras will be reprogrammed and drivers will have a 60-day adjustment period before being ticketed.
