Man charged with fatally stabbing 14-year-old in Mott Haven appears in court

Police say Waldo Mejia is charged with fatally stabbing Caleb Rijos while he was walking to school.

The man who has been charged in connection to the fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old in Mott Haven appeared in court on Thursday.

Police say Waldo Mejia is charged with fatally stabbing Caleb Rijos while he was walking to school.

Mejia faces assault and murder charges and pleaded not guilty.

Police tell News 12 Mejia stabbed Rijos in the heart and lungs. They are saying it was an unprovoked attack.

Mejia was in court Thursday for two separate stabbings. Police tell News 12 Mejia has a long list of crimes.

News 12 spoke with Rijos' aunt, who says her nephew was taken too soon.

"He didn't even have a mustache or anything. His voice didn't even change yet. We love you. We love you do much Caleb," said his aunt.

The judge ordered Mejia to appear in Supreme Court on Jan. 30.

Friends and family will have a basketball game in Caleb's honor Friday night.
