A massive boombox artwork is on display to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of hip-hop.

It's a collaboration between Lemonde Studio and the 161st Street Business Improvement District. Artists from Lemonde say the artwork was generated by the ideas of Bronx residents, and members from both groups say it was their way to commemorate 50 years of hip-hop.  

"With the big hip-hop concert coming up at Yankee Stadium, we were working on our own little homage to it, our own project and decided just to bring it to life," said Nicolas Synnott from Lemonde Studio.

The boombox was made by Lemonde's Felix Marzell. It stands 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide, lighting up at night and displaying a tribute to the anniversary of hip-hop on the back. It also contains a speaker that plays music.

Trey Jenkins, the executive director of 161st Street BID, told News 12 that in the coming weeks the boombox will feature music from local artists. He says he wants to bring more installations like this to the Bronx for people to enjoy.

"We want to make sure we bring things like this to this area and make it a destination for tourists, for the community, for anybody coming to this area to see something cool," said Jenkins.

The artwork will be on display through September.
