New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton announced new safety measures at the city's many homeless shelters Tuesday.

Starting immediately, city officials say the NYPD will begin retraining Department of Homeless Services security staff and place a management team at DHS to develop a plan to upgrade security at all facilities.

The city will also re-establish a domestic violence program at shelters that ended six years ago. 

Plans will also be put in place for a new system for reporting incidents, better defining of what constitutes a "critical incident," and mandating that violent incidents are reported separately.

The changes come after recent spikes in violent crimes at homeless shelters across the city.
