Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday he is phasing out the city's public school Gifted and Talented program by late 2022.
Students in the program will continue with the accelerated learning for now, but the program is expected to be phased out by fall 2022.
Moving forward, students will be tested in third grade and then offered extra tailored instruction beyond the normal classroom.
The mayor says this new accelerated learning model is a blueprint. The mayor and chancellor will now go into the community to speak to parents and then make changes before implementation.
