New York City Mayor Eric Adams is casting doubt on the planned timeline to close Rikers Island by 2027. Adams said at New York Law School that the City Council needs to revise the plan approved four years ago, adding that the population at Rikers is higher than the four borough-based jails can handle. Adams also said the cost of the plan has increased beyond what was anticipated in 2019.
