A 5-year-old boy with autism went missing from school for nearly an hour Monday, according to his mother.
Evelyn Gonzalez says her son wandered the streets for 45 minutes after getting on a school bus at P.S. 83 and getting dropped off at a stranger's house in Van Nest.
Furthermore, she says the school hasn't given her a full explanation. According to Gonzalez, the principal told her that somebody put the boy on the bus.
"My son isn't supposed to be going on the school bus," she says.
The woman who found the child in Van Nest left a note inside his backpack for the mother, and the two spoke, Gonzalez says.
"I called the lady, and the lady tells me that the bus driver left my son on the street," Gonzalez says. "And I was like, 'What?' And she said, 'Yea, your son was crying and asking for his mom.'"
After the woman found the child, she realized he was nonverbal and searched his backpack to find the school's information, Gonzalez says.
The Department of Education says it's looking into the incident.
As for Gonzalez, she says she's thankful for the good Samaritan but angry that the incident transpired.
