The MTA will shut down the system during overnight hours starting Wednesday for cleaning and disinfecting.
It will be shut down from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. so that trains and stations can be cleaned. MTA officials say they hope this will also result in fewer homeless people sleeping in the cars.
Additional bus service and for-hire cars will be made available to essential workers who need transportation. The MTA says essential workers will get two free trips on for-hire vehicles each night when the shutdown begins.
