Residents celebrated the official opening of the new City Island Bridge on Sunday.
Despite the rain, residents met at the newly renovated bridge to applaud the newly constructed bridge Sunday morning.
At the ceremony, community members walked across the bridge and the first car crossed the bridge.
For years, the community has fought over plans to build a bridge that is more modern and one that has a cable-styled design.
In addition to the modern look, the bridge is wider, with a pedestrian walkway and two designated bike lanes.
“It's safe and attractive and the thing they cared most about, says Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “A bridge that fits in with this community.”
