A new hit-and-run alert system is taking effect today.
The system is named after Jean-Paul Guerreo, also known as DJ Jinx Paul, who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Brooklyn nearly a year ago.
Under the new law, alerts will go out to the public within 24 hours of a hit-and-run accident involving a fatality or serious injury.
The alert will include information about the vehicle police are searching for.
Officials say New York City averages at least one hit-and-run per week.
