In an effort to curb fare evasion, the MTA is asking bus drivers to not automatically open the back door on their buses unless it's an emergency.
The new policy means potential fare evaders have to enter through the front door of the bus. It also means commuters will have to manually activate the back and center doors themselves if they want to exit through them.
The doors on "select bus service" routes will continue to open automatically at all stops.
According to the MTA's latest fare-evasion survey, nearly 30% of riders aren't paying their way.
