New Sanctuary Coalition, a Bronx-based nonprofit, trained volunteers Monday to help individuals facing deportation.
The training was held at Tremont United Methodist Church. Volunteers learned how to accompany people to their immigration hearings, Immigration and Customs Enforcement check-ins, family court and other obligations.
The volunteers will be able to provide moral support during those immigration-related appointments and obligations and daily tasks such as grocery shopping or a trip to the bus stop. The idea is that someone does not have to go by themselves to somewhere they don’t feel comfortable.
Unease can be caused by the fact that these individuals can face deportation at any moment, so having someone there, the organization says, can provide them with an extra set of eyes and ears, along with a witness.
Members of the nonprofit told News 12 that in their database are an average of 75 opportunities a week for those looking to be paired up with an immigrant.
“My hope for these trainings is to be able to illustrate to the folks who do show up, who do show they are actively invested in a more just future for themselves, for their communities, for their city, that there are daily tangible opportunities to stand up, to show up, to make a difference for their neighbors,” said member Ambien Mitchell. “For their community.”

New Sanctuary Coalition also provides an opportunity for people who personally know someone facing deportation to get trained even if they aren't in the database.
