An outside commission has suggested that the NYPD use a Taser pilot program and simulation software to improve weapons training.
According to the Rand Corporation, officers should also have more training with role-play exercises and the NYPD should improve its review process after an officer uses his or her weapon.
The group gave the NYPD an overall OK mark. Well-known cases, such as the Sean Bell shooting in November of 2006, led the department to ask for an independent study of its practices.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says beginning Wednesday, supervisors will carry Tasers, and the department will look into a pilot program first before it hands out the weapons to patrol officers.
