As hip-hop celebrates is 50th anniversary, the New York Public Library is now offering limited-edition hip-hop library cards.
New Yorkers can get their hands on the colorful cards at New York Public Library branches across the city. The cards celebrate the music genre, its global growth and its role in NYC culture.
The NYPL held a VIP event at Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research for a select few who made their own contributions to the card’s design, which resembled a cassette tape from the soundtrack of the 1983 film "Wild Style."
The New York Public Library chose the "Wild Style" mural image because the soundtrack is part of their extensive hip-hop research collection at the Schomburg Center.
The library is also offering a list of recommended reads of 50 different books that explore the impact and influence of hip-hop.
