New York State is making it mandatory for nursing homes to start testing all their workers, but now some administrators are sounding the alarm saying they don’t know if it is possible.
The state wants nursing homes to test their staff for COVID-19 twice a week.
City and state officials say it is the right direction to head in to take care of the most vulnerable, the elderly.
According to the Associated Press, in New York City alone COVID-19 has killed more than 5,000 people living in nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
The state’s goal is to test 185,000 employees twice a week, but administrators raising concerns that there won’t be enough testing kits and are asking who will cover the costs, that are up to $150 per kit.

The state suggests workers could be sent to one of the several free testing sites across the state. Sites like Gotham Health in Morrisania that is testing people for free in the Bronx. The Health Department says they’re working to give assisted living facilities free access to testing.
Officials say nursing homes that don’t follow these protocols can face thousands of fines and even lose their license.
