News 12's Kevin Maher named New York Sportscaster of the Year
One of News 12 Sports' own has been named New York's best.
News 12 Long Island Sports Director Kevin Maher was honored Monday as the New York Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.
Maher beat out other New York sports heavyweights including SNY's Gary Cohen, WNBC's Bruce Beck and WCBS' Otis Livingston.
Past winners include Beck, Ian Eagle, Mike Breen, Marv Albert and Suzyn Waldman since it was first awarded in 1959. Maher now stands alongside News 12 legend Bob Wolff in garnering the award.
Maher adds the honor to a long list of awards he's taken home in his career - he's a 13-time Emmy winner and has won more than 40 awards for sports reporting from organizations including the NYC Press Club, the LI Press Club, the NYS Associated Press and the NYS Broadcasters Association.
Maher won the award in a year when covering sports was as challenging as ever, with athletics events canceled or postponed throughout 2020. The News 12 Sports team continued to bring fresh, engaging sports news from the youth, high school, college and professional sports scene -- whether it be from home or at News 12's studios.
ESPN's Rich Cimini shares the mantle with Maher this year, as the Jets beat reporter won NSMA's New York Sportswriter of the Year. Cimini is a Setauket resident and a Sachem graduate.
